Become a Docent The Docent Program at the Salvador Dalí Museum is at the heart of the museum’s educational mission. All docents enroll in a seventeen-week training program (roughly the equivalent of a 3 credit university-level course) that consists of fifteen two-hour slide lectures, three written tests, and a final mini-tour examination.
In addition to the initial training period, there is ongoing training for docents including curatorial walk-throughs of new exhibitions, refresher classes, and advanced seminars. Docents are responsible for developing their own tours and are encouraged to develop a repertoire of tours for specific audiences and special interest groups.
Adult Docents create and conduct public tours of the Museum’s permanent and visiting exhibitions as well as private tours arranged by the Group Tours Office. Over 100 docents currently lead tours at the museum. Bound together by a mutual interest in Dalí, docents range in age from their late 20’s to their 80’s, are from a wide variety of cultural and educational backgrounds, speak a range of languages, are retired and hold full-time jobs.
- "DalíVision" Outreach Docents
Museum docents can choose to become "DalíVision" Docents and teach outside of the museum’s walls by presenting slide or poster presentations at schools, convalescent homes, hospitals, recreation centers, after-school programs, social service groups and other community organizations.
"DalíVision" Docents travel throughout Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco, Polk, Manatee and Sarasota counties on a regular basis and have even found themselves operating from as far away as Arizona and Canada long after their families or jobs took them out of Florida.
As part of the Junior Docents summer program, elementary and middle school students are trained in a mini docent course that enables them to share General Information about Dalí and his paintings with the public. This program introduces students to artistic processes, builds self-esteem and public speaking skills, and brings families to the museum.
For the past several summers, Junior Docents have given tours to the public as well as to high school students visiting through Eckerd College from the Kinjo school in Nagoya, Japan.
Docent Training
The seventeen-week docent training course for adults is offered on an as-needed basis, usually on weekday evenings. After completion of initial training, docents are required to conduct a specific number of tours each month for at least one year.
The Dalí Museum encourages people of all ages, ethnic origins, creeds and cultures to apply and, as six of every ten visitors to the museum come from outside the U.S., people with skills in languages other than English are especially encouraged to get involved.
For more General Information on becoming a docent and enrolling in docent training, please contact the Curator of Education at curatorial@salvadordalimuseum.org.
