Letter from the Director

Spring, 2008

We are pleased to bring to the Salvador Dali Museum, Dali & Film, organized by the Tate Modern with the cooperation of the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dali. Legendary works by Dali, generously loaned by other museums and private collectors, join those of our own collection. We are grateful to our colleagues the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the New York Museum of Modern Art for presenting this exhibition, before and after ours, to their audiences as part of the American run of this show.

Please see our calendar for the enriching programming that runs parallel to this exhibition: lectures at Studio@620 in St. Petersburg, a film festival at Eckerd College, an academic class on Dali & Film at USF; Lights, Camera, Dali, a newspaper that provides in depth information on the nature of making and watching films, which is published by the St. Petersburg Times and will be distributed to all the classrooms in Pinellas County. Look for the Dali Museum Surreal Film Contest to be displayed in public places and Double Images: the Dali Look Alike contest to be judged by John Waters.

We are grateful to the presenting sponsor of this exhibition, Progress Energy, and to the St. Petersburg Environmental Research Center, not only for their financial support in bringing this weighty and riveting exhibition to our museum, but for their collegiality in presenting the greater lesson of this work, the continuity of modes of visual representation in new media, to our community. In its schools, in public arenas, even on the sides of buildings, the discussion of the nature of painting and film, will flicker and resonate during this exhibition.
